Synopsis – What to Expect from “Opening Night”
Opening Night is a 1977 comedy-drama directed by John Cassavetes. It tells the story of Myrtle Gordon (Gena Rowlands), an aging Broadway star who is struggling to come to terms with her age and her waning stardom.
The film begins with Myrtle and her entourage preparing for the opening night of her latest play. Myrtle is nervous and unsure of herself, and her anxiety is compounded when a young fan of hers, a girl named Louise (Joan Blondell), shows up at her dressing room. Myrtle is initially dismissive of the girl, but gradually warms to her and begins to see her as a kindred spirit.
Meanwhile, Myrtle’s co-star, a young actor named Sandy (John Marley), is dealing with his own problems. He is convinced that he is not good enough for the part and is struggling to find the confidence to perform.
On opening night, Myrtle’s anxiety reaches a fever pitch. She is determined to make the performance a success, but her fears and insecurities threaten to derail her efforts. As the performance progresses, Myrtle begins to find her groove and the audience is captivated.
However, during the curtain call, Myrtle is overcome by emotion and her performance is cut short. After the show, Myrtle is comforted by Louise, who has been watching her from the audience, and Sandy, who has been inspired by her performance.
