Synopsis – What to Expect from “One True Thing”
One True Thing is a 1998 drama film directed by Carl Franklin and starring Meryl Streep, Renée Zellweger, and William Hurt. The film is based on the novel of the same name by Anna Quindlen.
The story revolves around Ellen Gulden (Renée Zellweger), a successful New York journalist who is forced to put her career on hold when her mother Kate (Meryl Streep) is diagnosed with cancer. Ellen moves back home to take care of her mother, and in the process, she learns to appreciate the value of family and the importance of living life to the fullest.
The film begins with Ellen’s father, George (William Hurt), making the difficult decision to tell his daughter about her mother’s illness. Ellen is shocked and overwhelmed by the news, but she decides to put her own life on hold to take care of her mother.
Ellen faces many challenges as she adjusts to living at home with her parents. She must learn to cope with her mother’s illness, her father’s grief, and her own feelings of guilt for not having been there for her mother earlier. As Ellen and her mother learn to accept each other, they develop a strong bond.
Throughout the film, Ellen is also forced to confront her own feelings about her parents’ relationship. She discovers that her mother and father had a much more complicated relationship than she had ever imagined.
As the film progresses, Ellen
