Once Were Warriors is a 1994 New Zealand drama film directed by Lee Tamahori and based on the novel of the same name by Alan Duff. The film follows the story of a Māori family living in urban Auckland, New Zealand. The family is led by the father, Jake Heke, a volatile and often violent man who is a member of the Māori biker gang, the Mongrel Mob. Jake’s wife, Beth, is a loving mother who struggles to keep her family together despite Jake’s frequent outbursts of violence.
The film follows the Heke family as they struggle to cope with the poverty and racism they face in their everyday lives. Jake’s alcoholism and violent temper lead to a series of unfortunate events that threaten to tear the family apart. The film also explores the effects of domestic violence on the family and how it affects the children.
