On the Waterfront is a classic American drama, released in 1954 and directed by Elia Kazan. The film stars Marlon Brando as Terry Malloy, a former boxer and dock worker who is caught in a struggle between the corrupt union boss, Johnny Friendly, and the crusading priest, Father Barry. Terry’s brother, Charley, works for Friendly and is trying to keep Terry from exposing the mob’s control of the waterfront. Terry’s struggle is complicated by his relationship with Edie Doyle, the sister of a murdered dock worker.
The film follows Terry’s journey as he is forced to choose between loyalty to his brother and the mob, or to stand up for what is right. He slowly realizes the consequences of his actions and must decide if he is willing to risk his life to stand up to the corrupt union boss and mob.
The film is a powerful exploration of morality and social justice, and earned eight Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture, Best Actor (Marlon Brando), Best Supporting Actress (Eva Marie Saint), and Best Director (Elia Kazan).
