Synopsis/Plot

Official Secrets is a thrilling political drama based on true events. It tells the story of Katharine Gun (Keira Knightley), a British intelligence specialist who makes a controversial decision to leak a top-secret memo to the press in order to prevent an illegal war.

Katharine works for the Government Communications Headquarters (GCHQ) in 2003, when the United States and the United Kingdom are preparing to invade Iraq. She discovers an email from the US National Security Agency (NSA) asking GCHQ to assist in gathering compromising information on United Nations Security Council members in order to gain their support for the invasion. Horrified by the implications of the memo, Katharine decides to leak it to the press in the hopes of preventing a war.

Katharine’s decision puts her in the sights of the authorities, and she is arrested and charged with violating the Official Secrets Act. With her freedom and reputation on the line, she is forced to defend her actions in court. She is aided by a determined lawyer (Ralph Fiennes) and a journalist (Matt Smith) who is determined to get the truth out.
