Synopsis – What to Expect from “Oddball”
Oddball is a 2015 Australian family comedy-drama film directed by Stuart McDonald and written by Peter Ivan.
The film follows the story of an eccentric chicken farmer, Allan “Swampy” Marsh (Shane Jacobson), who is determined to save a colony of penguins living on Middle Island, off the coast of Warrnambool, Australia. He enlists the help of his granddaughter, Madeline (Sarah Snook), to guard the penguins against fox attacks.
The film begins with Swampy and Madeline walking along the beach, with Madeline complaining about having to help her grandfather save the penguins. Swampy then reveals to Madeline that he has been watching the penguins for years and has grown to love them.
Meanwhile, the mayor of Warrnambool, Mr. Parer (Alan Tudyk), is determined to get rid of the penguins, as they are costing the town money. He hires a team of fox hunters to get rid of the birds, and the team is led by a cruel and ruthless man named John Ladd (John Batchelor).
Swampy and Madeline enlist the help of the local townsfolk to help protect the penguins from the fox hunters. They also enlist the help of a local veterinarian, Dr. Smith (Frank Woodley), to help them care for the birds.
