Synopsis/Plot
Novitiate is a 2017 drama film directed by Margaret Betts and starring Margaret Qualley, Melissa Leo, and Julianne Nicholson. The film follows a young woman named Cathleen Harris (Margaret Qualley) as she enters a convent in the early 1960s and struggles to come to terms with the strict rules and regulations of the Catholic Church.
Cathleen is a devout Catholic, and her desire to become a nun is so strong that she is willing to sacrifice her own happiness and comfort to pursue her dream. She is taken in by the Mother Superior (Melissa Leo), who is a strict disciplinarian and believes that the Church should be the only source of guidance and direction in the lives of her novices.
Cathleen soon discovers that life in the convent is not what she expected. She is subjected to harsh physical and psychological punishments, and her faith is tested as she struggles to make sense of her place in the world. She is also forced to confront her own sexuality as she is exposed to a new world of temptation and forbidden desires.
