Nothing in Common is a 1986 comedy-drama directed by Garry Marshall and starring Tom Hanks and Jackie Gleason. The movie follows the story of David Basner (Hanks), a successful advertising executive, and his father, Max (Gleason), a recently retired shoe salesman.
David is a workaholic and has been living a fast-paced lifestyle for years. He is caught off guard when his father reveals he is retiring and moving in with David and his girlfriend, Sarah (Bess Armstrong). As David adjusts to his father’s presence in his life, he discovers that he and his father have very little in common.
David’s father is very traditional and disapproves of David’s lifestyle. He is also very critical of Sarah and her career. The two clash over their different views on life, but David soon discovers that his father is more complex than he originally thought.
Max is dealing with his own issues, including a failing marriage and a lack of money. He is also struggling to accept his son’s lifestyle and choices. Despite their differences, David and Max eventually find common ground and begin to build a relationship.
As the two men grow closer, David begins to question his own choices and values. He begins to realize that he is missing out on important moments in life, and he starts to make changes in his career and personal life.
In the end, David and Max come to understand each other and accept
