Synopsis/Plot
Notes on a Scandal is a 2006 British psychological thriller-drama film directed by Richard Eyre and based on the 2003 novel of the same name by Zoë Heller. The story follows a veteran teacher at a London secondary school who begins an affair with a fifteen-year-old student.
The film stars Judi Dench as Barbara Covett, an acerbic and cynical teacher at a London secondary school. She is a lonely spinster who has been teaching at the school for over thirty years and has developed a friendship with a new colleague, Sheba Hart (Cate Blanchett). Sheba is a younger woman who is married with two children and is having an affair with a fifteen-year-old student, Steven Connolly (Andrew Simpson).
When Barbara discovers the affair, she uses her knowledge to manipulate Sheba and gain her trust. Sheba begins to confide in Barbara and the two become close friends. Barbara’s obsession with Sheba increases and she begins to take control of Sheba’s life, leading to a dramatic climax.
