Synopsis/Plot
Nomadland is a 2020 American drama film directed by Chloé Zhao and written by Zhao and Jessica Bruder. It stars Frances McDormand as Fern, a woman who, after losing everything in the Great Recession, embarks on a journey through the American West, living as a van-dwelling modern-day nomad. The film also stars David Strathairn, Linda May, Charlene Swankie, and Bob Wells.
Nomadland follows Fern, a woman in her sixties, who after being laid off from her job due to the Great Recession, packs her van and sets off on a journey through the American West. As she travels, she meets a community of nomads, who live out of their vans and RVs, and work temporary jobs to make ends meet. Fern bonds with her nomadic neighbors, and learns to appreciate the beauty of the open road and the freedom of living without a permanent home. Along the way, she also discovers the harsh realities of life on the road, and the challenges of being an outsider in a society that doesn’t understand her lifestyle.
