Synopsis – What to Expect from “Nobel Son”
Nobel Son is a 2007 American dark comedy-thriller film directed by Randall Miller and starring Alan Rickman, Bryan Greenberg, Shawn Hatosy, Mary Steenburgen, Bill Pullman, Danny DeVito, and Eliza Dushku.
The story follows Eli Michaelson (Alan Rickman), a Nobel Prize-winning chemist, and his dysfunctional family. Eli’s son, Barkley (Bryan Greenberg), is a graduate student who is struggling to find his place in the world. When Eli is kidnapped and held for ransom, Barkley is forced to use his intelligence and cunning to rescue his father.
The film opens with Eli receiving the Nobel Prize for Chemistry in Stockholm. Barkley, who is not particularly close to his father, is not present at the ceremony. Meanwhile, Barkley’s mother, Sarah (Mary Steenburgen), is struggling with her husband’s success and her own feelings of inadequacy.
Back in Los Angeles, Barkley is struggling to finish his dissertation and is having difficulty in his relationship with his girlfriend, City Hall (Eliza Dushku). One day, he receives a phone call from a mysterious stranger, Thaddeus James (Bill Pullman), who tells him that Eli has been kidnapped and is being held for ransom. Barkley is told that he must pay the ransom in order to secure his father’s safe return.
