Synopsis – What to Expect from “Nine to Five”
Nine to Five is a 1980 American comedy film directed by Colin Higgins and starring Jane Fonda, Lily Tomlin, and Dolly Parton as three working women living out their fantasies of getting even with, and their successful overthrow of, the company’s autocratic, “sexist, egotistical, lying, hypocritical bigot” boss, Franklin Hart Jr. (Dabney Coleman).
The story follows three working women, Judy Bernly (Jane Fonda), Violet Newstead (Lily Tomlin), and Doralee Rhodes (Dolly Parton), who are all employed by Consolidated Companies, a large firm headed by the unctuous Franklin Hart Jr. (Dabney Coleman). Judy is a divorced mother who has just been fired from her job and is forced to take a job as a secretary at Consolidated. Violet is a longtime employee and the firm’s most senior worker, but is constantly passed over for promotions due to her gender. Doralee is a beautiful young woman who is also passed over for promotions, but is constantly subjected to sexual harassment from Hart.
The three women become fast friends, and soon hatch a plan to take revenge on Hart. They kidnap him and hold him hostage in his own home, tying him up and forcing him to listen to their demands. They demand equal pay for equal work, an end to sexual harassment, and a more equitable division of labor. They also threaten to expose Hart’s past misdeeds
