Synopsis/Plot
Night of the Living Dead is a classic horror film written and directed by George A. Romero. It was released in 1968 and is considered one of the most influential horror films of all time. The movie follows a group of people who are trapped in an isolated farmhouse in rural Pennsylvania while being besieged by a horde of flesh-eating zombies. The group is led by Ben (Duane Jones), a resourceful African-American man who is determined to survive the night.
The movie begins with a young couple, Barbara (Judith O’Dea) and her brother Johnny (Russell Streiner), visiting a cemetery. They are soon attacked by a zombie and Barbara is left traumatized. She is rescued by Ben, who takesher back to the nearby farmhouse. There, they meet five other people who have also taken refuge from the undead. As the night progresses, the group struggles to survive the relentless onslaught of the living dead, while also dealing with internal conflicts and the fear of the unknown.
The movie is an effective blend of horror and social commentary. Romero uses the zombie invasion as a metaphor for the chaos and violence of the Vietnam War. The film also features a strong racial element, with Ben’s resourcefulness and leadership being contrasted with the others’ racism and mistrust of him. In the end, Night of the Living Dead is an iconic and influential horror movie that continues to terrify and fascinate audiences to this day.
