Synopsis/Plot
News of the World is a 2020 American western drama film directed by Paul Greengrass and written by Luke Davies and Greengrass, based on the 2016 novel of the same name by Paulette Jiles. The film stars Tom Hanks as Captain Jefferson Kyle Kidd, a veteran of the Civil War who now travels around Texas in 1870, reading news from around the world to small town audiences. When he is asked to deliver a young girl, Johanna, to her aunt and uncle in San Antonio, he finds himself on a dangerous journey across the state. Along the way, they encounter danger and kindness, and Kidd must decide whether to take the girl to her family or keep her safe in his care.
The film follows Kidd as he and Johanna make their way through the dangerous Texas frontier. They meet a variety of people, including a former Confederate soldier, a Native American chief, and a traveling showman. Kidd is determined to deliver Johanna to her family, but she is determined to remain with him. As they travel, Kidd and Johanna form a bond, and Kidd begins to see her as a daughter.
