Netflix not working with VPN and tried many methods? These possible solutions might work for you!

If you’ve been using a VPN service to stream Netflix geo-restricted content, you must have come across a “Whoops, something went wrong…” prompt.

This error occurs when Netflix detects your VPN and cuts off your streaming until you turn off your VPN.

Sometimes, a simple refresh can sort everything out. However, if your VPN gets marked by Netflix, you have to do much more than that.

Instead of blaming your VPN, you need to try a few proven fixes to re-access the massive content catalog of Netflix. We’ll tell you how to fix your Netflix not working with a VPN problem.

But first, let’s see why Netflix has to restrict the content region-wise. Spoiler Alert, it’s not Netflix’s fault.

Netflix & The Regional Restrictions

There are 17,000+ global titles on Netflix right now- a number that grows every single day. But not everyone has access to all these movies, TV shows, and whatnot.

Why? Because Netflix is available in 190 countries. In all of those countries, the copyright laws and licensing requirements differ. And Netflix doesn’t always get global streaming/distribution rights for every title.

So, to avoid legal battles with these giant production studios, Netflix restricts the content to countries/regions. In short, if you can’t access an international movie or TV show in the US, it’s not Netflix’s fault. It’s because the production company sold the rights to a different streaming service, mostly for a bigger cheque.

But you can still stream that restricted content.

How To Access Restricted Netflix Content?

All you need is a good VPN.

A VPN will change your IP address, and you’ll be able to access the Netflix library of any country, regardless of your physical location.

ExpressVPN and NordVPN are 2 of the best choices right now. ExpressVPN offers 2 plans, while NordVPN has 9.

We recommend a premium/paid VPN, but those who want a free VPN for Netflix should use Windscribe.

Once you have a VPN, choose a server from a country whose Netflix library you’d like to explore. For example, if you want to watch something exclusively available on Netflix UK while sitting in the United States, you’ll have to choose a UK server from your VPN.

It’s perfectly legal and the only way to watch content from different Netflix libraries.

At least that was the case up until January 2016.

Why Is Netflix Not Working With VPN?

Basic, Standard, and Premium Netflix users are allowed to use Netflix with a VPN. However, Netflix never allowed access to region-restricted content. But everyone was using Netflix with VPN for the same reason.

So, Netflix started blocking VPNs.

Mid-January 2016, Netflix rolled out “Netflix Proxy Detection.”

Anyone streaming Netflix with a VPN or “an unblocker” would face the Streaming Error. (Error Code: M7111-1331-5059)

Netflix’s solution to this problem is obvious, turn off your VPN. And with that, lose access to libraries from different regions.

So, what to do about Netflix blocking VPN? We have some tips and tricks that are way better than Netflix’s suggestion.

Netflix Not Working With VPN – 3 Quick Fixes!

If your Netflix isn’t streaming right with a VPN, there are plenty of workarounds to try. But before we get to them, make sure you’re using a proper VPN. Free or freemium VPNs won’t bypass Netflix’s restrictions for long.

Even if they do, you’ll experience a massive drop in connection speeds. So, you must invest in a good VPN. And as we said earlier, ExpressVPN or NordVPN is the best right now.

If your problem persists, then here are the 3 quick and easy fixes to Netflix not working with a VPN.

1. Change VPN Server

The quickest workaround for Netflix not working with VPN is to change your server.

Once Netflix figures out that you’re using VPN, your IP address will be blocked. All you have to do is choose a different server within the country.

For example, if your ExpressVPN is not working with Netflix UK using a London server, switching to a Manchester or Glasgow server will remove the Streaming Error.

You’ll get to access Netflix’s UK library and stream with ease.

After changing the server, refresh (or relaunch) Netflix, and normal service should resume.

2. Change VPN Protocol

If changing your server doesn’t work, try a different VPN protocol.

Just as servers use different locations, various protocols use different methods to bypass Netflix’s proxy ban.

Changing vpn protocol

For NordVPN, NordLynx is the best VPN Protocol to stream Netflix.
For ExpressVPN, the Lightway protocol is the best choice.

The optimal protocol differs depending on the VPN you use. Try out a few and see what works best for you.

But avoid PPTP.

That’s an outdated protocol with low security and weak encryption.

3. Clear Browser Cache & Cookies

Another way to bypass Netflix’s proxy ban is to clear your browser cache and cookies. When you accept cookies, websites get access to your location temporarily. Netflix does the same by accessing your cookies and cache.

And after finding out your original location, Netflix bans your IP.

But when you clear browsing cookies and cache, Netflix loses your location data, and the ban goes away.

Now you know why your Netflix is not working with VPN, why Netflix has to restrict the content, and how you can access it despite the Netflix proxy ban.
