Synopsis – What to Expect from “Nanook of the North”
Nanook of the North is a 1922 silent documentary film directed by Robert J. Flaherty. The film follows the life of an Inuk, Nanook, as he and his family survive the harsh environment of the Canadian Arctic.
The film begins with Nanook and his family preparing for a hunt. They build a kayak, hunt for seals, and fish for salmon. Nanook and his family are shown living a traditional Inuit lifestyle, including igloo building, hunting, and fishing.
The family then moves to a trading post to trade their goods for supplies. Here, Nanook is exposed to the modern world and is amazed by the technology. He is shown learning how to use a rifle and a phonograph.
The film follows the family as they travel to a mission to learn about Christianity. Nanook and his family are shown adjusting to the new lifestyle, but eventually they return to their traditional ways.
