Synopsis – What to Expect from “Mystery Train”
Mystery Train is a 1989 Japanese film directed by Jim Jarmusch. It follows three separate stories that are all linked by the same train station in the city of Memphis, Tennessee.
The first story follows a young Japanese couple, Jun and Mitzuko, who arrive in Memphis to explore the city’s musical heritage. They check into a hotel and wander the streets of the city, taking in the sights and sounds. Later that night, they meet a mysterious stranger in the hotel bar and he tells them a story about his past.
The second story follows an Italian widow, Luisa, who is visiting Memphis to scatter her late husband’s ashes at the train station. Along the way, she meets a variety of colorful characters, including a young Elvis impersonator.
The third story follows an American couple, Johnny and Dee Dee, who are traveling to Memphis to attend a funeral. On the way, they are stopped by a police officer who accuses them of carrying drugs. After being released, they find themselves in a seedy bar and, while there, they become involved in a violent altercation.
The stories of the three characters all converge at the train station, where they all experience a moment of clarity and understanding. In the end, they all realize that life is a journey that can take unexpected turns, and that it is important to take the time to appreciate the beauty of the world around us.
