Synopsis – What to Expect from “Muriel’s Wedding”
Muriel’s Wedding is a 1994 Australian comedy-drama film about the life of an awkward 20-year old woman named Muriel Heslop (Toni Collette). She lives in a small town in Australia and is constantly ridiculed by her peers for being overweight and for her lack of social skills.
Muriel’s life is changed when she meets Rhonda (Rachel Griffiths), a free-spirited woman who encourages her to take control of her life. With Rhonda’s help, Muriel moves to Sydney and gets a job as a secretary. She also begins to reinvent herself, changing her style and attitude.
Meanwhile, Muriel’s mother (Jeanie Drynan) is determined to find her a husband and arranges a string of disastrous dates. Muriel eventually falls in love with a handsome young man named David (Daniel Lapaine), but her mother disapproves of the relationship and pressures her to marry a wealthy man.
Muriel takes a stand and decides to go ahead and marry David. She and Rhonda plan the perfect wedding. However, on the day of the wedding, Muriel’s mother arrives and tries to stop the wedding. Muriel and Rhonda must come up with a plan to save the wedding.
In the end, Muriel and David get married and Muriel’s mother accepts the marriage. Muriel’s life is changed forever as she embarks on a new journey with her husband.
