Synopsis – What to Expect from “Mr. Turner”
Mr. Turner is a biographical drama film about the life of British artist J.M.W. Turner, focusing on his later years.
The film begins with Turner (Timothy Spall), an aging artist in his 60s, living a solitary life in London. He is a respected and acclaimed painter, but his personal life is a bit of a mystery. He has a relationship with his housekeeper Hannah Danby (Dorothy Atkinson) and her two daughters, but it is unclear if he is their father.
Turner travels to the countryside to paint, where he meets a young woman, Sophia Booth (Marion Bailey). They develop a close friendship, but Turner is unable to commit to her. He also meets a young widow, Mrs. Booth (Ruth Sheen), who is Sophia’s mother.
Back in London, Turner continues to paint and has a brief affair with a widow, Mrs. Booth. He also meets a young man, Joseph Mallord William Turner (Joshua McGuire), who is interested in becoming his apprentice.
Turner continues to travel and paint, and is increasingly drawn to the sea. He also experiences a series of health problems, including a stroke. He continues to paint, however, and his work becomes increasingly abstract and experimental.
The film culminates with Turner’s death, and a retrospective of his life and work. The film ends with a celebration of his life and legacy.
