Synopsis/Plot
Moulin Rouge! is a 2001 romantic musical film directed by Baz Luhrmann, starring Nicole Kidman and Ewan McGregor. Set in the Montmartre Quarter of Paris, France in the year 1900, the story follows a young English poet/writer, Christian (McGregor), as he falls in love with the star of the Moulin Rouge, cabaret actress and courtesan Satine (Kidman). The film is a visually stunning, musical extravaganza, featuring a host of popular songs from the past century.
The movie opens with a lavish and spectacular performance at the Moulin Rouge, featuring the beautiful Satine as the star of the show. Later, Christian arrives at the club, where he has been commissioned to write a play for the owner, Harold Zidler (Jim Broadbent). While there, Christian falls in love with Satine, despite the fact that she is already promised to the Duke (Richard Roxburgh). As the story progresses, the two lovers must overcome the obstacles that stand between them, including the Duke’s desire to possess Satine and the truth about her past.
