Synopsis/Plot
Moonlight is a 2016 American coming-of-age drama film written and directed by Barry Jenkins, based on Tarell Alvin McCraney’s unpublished semi-autobiographical play In Moonlight Black Boys Look Blue. The film stars Trevante Rhodes, André Holland, Janelle Monáe, Ashton Sanders, Jharrel Jerome, Naomie Harris, and Mahershala Ali.
The film follows the story of Chiron, a young African-American man growing up in Miami, Florida. Chiron is struggling to find his place in the world, dealing with his drug-addicted mother, Paula, and his sexuality. He is often bullied and isolated, and finds solace in his best friend Kevin. Chiron’s story is told in three chapters, each focusing on a different stage of his life.
In the first chapter, Chiron is a young boy nicknamed “Little”, growing up in a poor neighborhood. He is taken in by his drug-dealing, abusive father figure, Juan, and his kind-hearted girlfriend, Teresa. Juan teaches Chiron to swim, and helps him to understand his own sexuality.
In the second chapter
