Synopsis/Plot
Mona Lisa Smile is a 2003 romantic drama set in the 1950s at the fictional all-female college of Wellesley. The movie follows Katherine Watson (Julia Roberts), a free-thinking young woman who takes a job teaching art history at the college. Despite the conservative values of the college, Katherine encourages her students to think for themselves and to pursue their dreams, even if they don’t fit into the traditional roles of women at the time. Katherine also has to deal with the school’s strict headmistress, who doesn’t approve of her teaching methods.
The movie follows the lives of Katherine’s students as they struggle to find their place in the world. Betty (Kirsten Dunst) is a popular student who is expected to marry her wealthy boyfriend but is secretly attracted to a male student. Joan (Julia Stiles) is a brilliant student who is expected to pursue a career in law but is more interested in pursuing a career in writing. Giselle (Maggie Gyllenhaal) is a rebellious student who is determined to pursue a career in art.
