Synopsis – What to Expect from “Mommie Dearest”
Mommie Dearest is a 1981 American biographical drama film directed by Frank Perry. The film stars Faye Dunaway, Diana Scarwid, and Mara Hobel, and is based on the 1978 autobiography of the same name by Christina Crawford.
The film is about the turbulent relationship between Christina Crawford (Scarwid) and her mother, Joan Crawford (Dunaway). Joan is a famous actress who has adopted Christina and her brother, Christopher (Hobel). Despite their initial loving relationship, Joan soon begins to show her true colors as an emotionally abusive and controlling mother. Christina is subjected to Joan’s rages and her attempts to control every aspect of her life.
The film follows Christina as she grows up, struggling with her mother and trying to make her own place in the world. Joan’s attempts to control her children become increasingly desperate and violent, leading to a dramatic confrontation between the two.
The film also explores the effects of Joan’s behavior on Christina’s brother, Christopher, and her relationship with her father, Alfred (Steve Forrest). Ultimately, Christina is able to break free from her mother’s grip and make a life for herself.
