Synopsis – What to Expect from “Mo’ Better Blues”
Mo’ Better Blues is a 1990 American musical drama film starring Denzel Washington, and directed by Spike Lee. The film follows jazz trumpeter Bleek Gilliam (Washington) and his professional and personal lives in New York City.
The film opens with Bleek and his jazz band performing at a club. After the performance, Bleek meets with his two managers, Giant (Spike Lee) and Little Man (John Turturro), who are trying to get Bleek to sign a contract with a record label. Bleek is reluctant to sign, but eventually agrees.
The next day, Bleek and his bandmates, Shadow Henderson (Wesley Snipes) and Left Hand Lacey (Cynda Williams), are rehearsing for a new album. Bleek is distracted by his romantic interest, Clarke Bentancourt (Joie Lee), and the two share a passionate kiss.
Meanwhile, Giant and Little Man are struggling to keep the band together, as Shadow is becoming increasingly resentful of Bleek’s leadership. Shadow starts to make his own decisions, and eventually leaves the band to pursue a solo career.
At the same time, Bleek’s relationship with Clarke is strained due to her demanding lifestyle. When Bleek learns that Clarke is pregnant, he decides to stay with her and take care of their child.
The film culminates with a performance at the Apollo Theater, where Bleek and his band perform a new song
