Synopsis/Plot
Missing is a 1982 American mystery drama film directed by Costa-Gavras and starring Jack Lemmon, Sissy Spacek, Melanie Mayron, John Shea, and Charles Cioffi. The film was adapted by Costa-Gavras and Donald Stewart from the novel The Execution of Charles Horman by Thomas Hauser.
The story follows the search for Charles Horman (Shea), an American journalist who has gone missing in the wake of the 1973 Chilean coup d’état led by Augusto Pinochet. Charles’ father, Ed Horman (Lemmon), and wife, Beth Horman (Spacek), travel to Chile to search for him, but find themselves blocked by the Chilean government and militaryAt every turn, Ed and Beth are met with obfuscation and deceit. As their search progresses, they are confronted with the possibility that Charles may have been a victim of state-sponsored terrorism. Ultimately, Ed and Beth must confront the grim reality that their son may have been executed by the Chilean government. As the film progresses, Ed and Beth come to terms with the tragedy of their son’s death, and the knowledge that they may never know the full truth of what happened to him.
