Synopsis/Plot
Mishima: A Life in Four Chapters is a 1985 biographical drama film directed by Paul Schrader and based on the life and work of Japanese author Yukio Mishima. The film follows the life of Mishima, from his childhood in 1940s Japan to his death in 1970. The film is divided into four chapters, each focusing on a different aspect of Mishima’s life.
The first chapter, “The Boy,” focuses on the early life of Mishima and his struggles with his sexuality and his desire for a more traditional lifestyle. It follows his journey from a young boy to a young man and his realization of his own identity.
The second chapter, “The Temple of the Golden Pavilion,” follows Mishima’s life as a writer and his attempts to reconcile his love for traditional Japanese culture with his own inner turmoil.
The third chapter, “Kyoko’s House,” follows Mishima’s relationship with his wife, Kyoko, and his attempts to come to terms with his own identity and sexuality.
