Synopsis/Plot
Minions is a 2015 American 3D computer-animated comedy film produced by Illumination Entertainment for Universal Pictures. It is the spin-off prequel to Despicable Me (2010) and the third installment in the Despicable Me franchise. Directed by Pierre Coffin and Kyle Balda, written by Brian Lynch, and produced by Chris Meledandri and Janet Healy, the film stars the voices of Coffin, Sandra Bullock, Jon Hamm, Michael Keaton, Allison Janney, Steve Coogan, and Jennifer Saunders with narration provided by Geoffrey Rush.
The story follows the Minions, small, yellow, henchmen-like creatures, who have served (and accidentally eliminated) a great number ofmasters over the centuries, as they venture out into the world to find a new master and home. In the process, they are accidentally recruited by Scarlet Overkill, a super-villain who, alongside her inventor husband Herb, hatches a plot to take over the world.
The film premiered at the Odeon Leicester Square in London on June 11, 2015, and was released in the United States on July 10, 2015. It received generally positive reviews from critics and grossed over $1 billion worldwide, making it the fifth highest-grossing film of 2015, the second highest-grossing animated film of 2015, the fourth highest-grossing animated film of all time, and the 25th highest-grossing film of all time. A sequel, Minions: The Rise of Gru, is scheduled to be released on July 3, 2020.
