Minding the Gap is a 2018 documentary film directed by Bing Liu. It follows three skateboarders in their hometown of Rockford, Illinois as they come of age and face the struggles of growing up.
The film follows the lives of three friends: Zack, Keire, and Bing. Zack is a white, working-class teen who is trying to make a better life for himself and his pregnant girlfriend Nina. Keire is an African-American teen who is living with his single mother and struggling to find his place in the world. Bing is a Chinese-American teen who is dealing with the aftermath of his parents’ divorce and trying to make sense of his own identity.
Through candid interviews and intimate footage, the film follows the boys as they skate, work, and face the struggles of growing up. As the film progresses, the boys’ relationships with each other and their families become more complex and the issues they face become more difficult.
The film examines the cycle of abuse and poverty that has affected the lives of the three boys and their families.
