Synopsis/Plot
Minamata is a 2020 drama film directed by Andrew Levitas and based on the book of the same name by Aileen Mioko Smith and Eugene Smith. Set in Japan in the 1970s, the film follows the story of renowned American photographer W. Eugene Smith and his wife Aileen as they travel to the remote fishing village of Minamata in search of a story.
The village is home to a population of fishermen and their families who have been suffering from a mysterious illness for years. After extensive investigation, the Smiths discover that the source of the illness is mercury poisoning from a nearby chemical factory owned by the Chisso Corporation.
The Smiths document the tragedy, risking their own safety to capture evidence of the devastating impact of the pollution on the village and its people. With the help of the local activists, they fight against the powerful corporation and its corrupt government allies in an effort to bring justice and compensation to the victims of Minamata.
The film is a powerful and moving story of courage, resilience and justice in the face of overwhelming odds. It stars Johnny Depp as Eugene Smith and Minami Hinase as Aileen, and features a powerful and emotionally charged performance by Hiroyuki
