Synopsis/Plot

Milk is a biographical drama about the life of Harvey Milk, an American politician and gay rights activist who was the first openly gay man to be elected to public office in California. Harvey Milk (Sean Penn) is a gay man who moves to San Francisco in 1972 and quickly becomes involved in the city’s burgeoning gay rights movement. He meets Scott Smith (James Franco), a young man who will become his long-time partner, and soon opens a camera store in the Castro District, becoming a popular figure in the community. Milk’s growing political influence leads him to run for the Board of Supervisors, where he campaigns for gay rights and other progressive causes. Despite his success, Milk and his supporters face strong opposition from conservative religious groups, and Milk’s life is threatened by the homophobic rhetoric of Supervisor Dan White (Josh Brolin).

The film follows Milk’s struggle to gain acceptance and equality for the LGBT community in San Francisco, and culminates in his tragic assassination in 1978. Through Milk’s story, the film examines
