Synopsis/Plot
Mildred Pierce is a 1945 American drama film starring Joan Crawford and based on the 1941 novel of the same name by James M. Cain. Directed by Michael Curtiz and written by Ranald MacDougall, the film follows the story of a working-class single mother during the Great Depression who tries to make a better life for her two daughters.
The film opens with Mildred Pierce (Joan Crawford) being questioned by police about the death of her second husband, Monte Beragon (Zachary Scott). As the story unfolds, Mildred is revealed to be a hard-working single mother, struggling to make ends meet during the Great Depression. After her husband leaves her, Mildred takes a job as a waitress and eventually opens her own restaurant.
Mildred’s elder daughter, Veda (Ann Blyth), is a spoiled and selfish teenager who is determined to climb the social ladder and marry into money. Mildred’s younger daughter, Kay (Jo Ann Marlowe), is a sweet and loving girl who is devoted to her mother. Mildred’s love for her daughters is tested when Veda begins to manipulate Mildred in order to get what she wants.
