Synopsis – What to Expect from “Mental”
Mental is a 2012 Australian comedy-drama film directed by P. J. Hogan and starring Toni Collette, Liev Schreiber, Anthony LaPaglia, Rebecca Gibney, and Kerry Fox.
The film follows Shaz (Toni Collette), a woman who is struggling to raise her five daughters on her own after her husband abandons them. Desperate for help, she takes a job as a nanny for a wealthy family with a rebellious teenage daughter, Coral (Lily Sullivan).
Shaz quickly realizes that the family is not what it seems. The father, Barry Moochmore (Liev Schreiber), is a former mental patient who is still struggling with his mental illness. His wife, Fay (Rebecca Gibney), is a pill-popping alcoholic who is unable to cope with her husband’s condition.
Shaz takes it upon herself to try and help the family, but her efforts are met with resistance from Fay and Barry, who both feel that Shaz is trying to control their lives.
Things come to a head when Coral runs away from home and Barry suffers a breakdown. Shaz is forced to make a difficult decision: will she stay and help the family, or will she leave and abandon them?
