Synopsis/Plot
Memoirs of a Geisha is a 2005 American epic drama film directed by Rob Marshall and based on the novel of the same name by Arthur Golden. Set in the 1930s and 1940s, the film follows Chiyo Sakamoto, a young Japanese girl who is sold by her parents to a geisha house and is transformed into a geisha. She then struggles to survive in a hostile world while also striving to reclaim her freedom.
The film follows Chiyo’s journey as she is sold by her parents to a geisha house in Kyoto, Japan. There, she is trained to become a geisha by the house’s strict mistress, Mother. Chiyo befriends another geisha, Pumpkin, and together they learn the art of geisha entertainment. Chiyo is also introduced to the Chairman, a wealthy and influential man who becomes her patron.
Chiyo eventually rises to become one of the most sought-after geishas in Kyoto. However, she is torn between her desire for freedom and her obligations to the geisha house. She also faces competition from a rival geisha, Hatsumomo, who is jealous of Chiyo’s growing popularity and attempts to sabotage her.
