Synopsis/Plot
Melancholia is a 2011 psychological drama film written and directed by Lars von Trier. The film stars Kirsten Dunst, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Kiefer Sutherland, Alexander Skarsgård, Charlotte Rampling, and John Hurt.
The film follows two sisters, Justine (Dunst) and Claire (Gainsbourg), as they deal with the mental and emotional toll of a rogue planet, Melancholia, on a collision course with Earth. As the planet draws closer, Justine’s mental health deteriorates and she falls into a deep depression. Claire, meanwhile, is forced to deal with her sister’s mental illness as well as the impending destruction of the planet.
The film is divided into two parts, the first of which follows Justine as she struggles with her depression and attempts to cope with the impending apocalypse. As the planet approaches, Justine’s mental state continues to decline, and she eventually comes to the conclusion that the destruction of the planet is a good thing. The second part of the film follows Claire as she tries to come to terms with Justine’s mental illness and the impending destruction of the planet.
