Synopsis – What to Expect from “Me and Earl and the Dying Girl”
Me and Earl and the Dying Girl is a 2015 American comedy-drama film directed by Alfonso Gomez-Rejon and written by Jesse Andrews, based on Andrews’ 2012 debut novel of the same name.
The film follows Greg Gaines, a high school senior who is trying to navigate the social hierarchy of his Pittsburgh high school. He has managed to stay on the fringes of the social scene by becoming friends with everyone but not having any real connections. One day, his mother forces him to befriend Rachel, a girl in his school who has recently been diagnosed with leukemia.
At first, Greg is resistant to the idea, but he eventually begrudgingly agrees. He and Rachel become friends, and he soon discovers her passion for film. This inspires him and his best friend Earl to make a series of short films for her. As their friendship with Rachel deepens, Greg and Earl realize the importance of their relationship and how it has changed them.
The film follows Greg and Earl as they come to terms with Rachel’s illness and how it affects their friendship. Through their journey, Greg discovers the importance of true friendship and learns to appreciate life. He also learns to confront his own fears and insecurities, and to stand up for himself and those he cares about. In the end, he discovers that life is too short to take anything for granted.
