Synopsis – What to Expect from “Maudie”
Maudie is a 2016 drama film directed by Aisling Walsh and written by Sherry White. The film stars Sally Hawkins as Maud Lewis, an arthritic folk artist who lives in a small house in Nova Scotia.
The film follows the life of Maud Lewis, a young woman who suffers from severe rheumatoid arthritis. Despite her physical limitations, Maud is determined to make a life for herself and pursue her passion for painting. She meets and falls in love with Everett Lewis (Ethan Hawke), a fish peddler who is looking for a housekeeper. Despite their differences, the two form a bond and eventually marry.
Maud’s paintings capture the beauty of the Nova Scotia landscape and her unique style quickly gains recognition. Despite Everett’s initial reluctance, he eventually supports Maud’s art career and the two become a beloved fixture in the small town.
As Maud’s fame grows, she is offered a grant from the government to paint a mural in the town hall. She is also invited to a show in Toronto, which she and Everett attend together. Despite her success, Maud is still plagued by her physical limitations and the couple’s relationship is strained.
The film culminates with Maud’s mural being unveiled in the town hall. The townspeople celebrate her work and her life, and Maud and Everett reconcile. The film ends with
