Synopsis – What to Expect from “Matinee”
Matinee is a 1993 comedy-drama film directed by Joe Dante and starring John Goodman, Cathy Moriarty, and Simon Fenton. The film is set in Key West, Florida during the Cuban Missile Crisis of 1962.
The film follows Lawrence Woolsey (John Goodman), an eccentric B-movie producer who is in town to promote his latest film, a giant-ant movie titled Mant. Woolsey is accompanied by his assistant, Bob (Simon Fenton), and the film’s star, a giant ant puppet named “Mant”.
The film follows the adventures of a group of teenagers, led by Gene Loomis (Simon Fenton), who are determined to see Woolsey’s movie. However, the Cuban Missile Crisis is looming and the town is in a state of panic. The kids must battle against the fear that is gripping the town and their parents’ reluctance to let them go to the movie.
The kids eventually manage to get to the theater, despite the fact that Woolsey’s movie is no longer playing. Woolsey, however, is still there and he offers them a special matinee showing of the movie. During the screening, the kids learn more about Woolsey and his past.
When the movie is over, the kids are inspired to stand up for themselves and their freedom. The film ends with the kids celebrating their victory over fear and the Cuban Missile Crisis.
