Synopsis/Plot
Mary Shelley is a 2018 biographical drama film directed by Haifaa Al-Mansour and written by Emma Jensen. The film stars Elle Fanning as author Mary Shelley, and tells the story of her life and the creation of her classic novel Frankenstein.
The film begins with a young Mary Shelley (Bel Powley) living with her father, William Godwin (Stephen Dillane), and being introduced to the radical ideas of the Enlightenment. Mary is determined to make her own way in life, and she is soon courted by the poet Percy Bysshe Shelley (Douglas Booth). The two elope to Europe, where they become part of a circle of intellectuals, including Lord Byron (Tom Sturridge).
Mary’s life is turned upside down when Percy’s first wife Harriet (Isabella Laughland) commits suicide, and the couple is ostracized by society. Mary is determined to prove her worth, and she begins to write a novel about a scientist who creates a monster. With the help of her friends, Mary completes the novel, and Frankenstein is published to great acclaim.
