Mary is a lonely and neglected child, whose only friend is her pet rooster, Ethel. One day, she randomly chooses an address from the New York phone book and begins writing letters to Max, who is surprised and delighted by the correspondence. Over the years, the two become close friends, exchanging letters about their lives, their dreams, and their struggles with mental health.
Max is an awkward and socially isolated man who is unable to make meaningful connections with people. He has a deep love for chocolate, which he uses to cope with his loneliness and depression.
