Synopsis/Plot
Marty is a 1955 American romantic drama film directed by Delbert Mann. The screenplay was written by Paddy Chayefsky, expanding upon his 1953 teleplay of the same name. The film stars Ernest Borgnine and Betsy Blair.
Marty tells the story of a lonely, unmarried, 34-year-old butcher (Borgnine) living in The Bronx, New York City, who is pressured by his friends and family to go out and find a wife. Marty is a kind but socially awkward man, who, despite his age, has never been married. He is told that he is a “bum” because of his unmarried status. Marty’s friends and family are concerned for him and try to find him a wife, but their efforts fail.
One night, Marty goes to a local dance, where he meets a young schoolteacher, Clara (Blair). Marty and Clara quickly become attracted to each other and start a relationship. Despite their age differences, Clara and Marty soon fall in love.
Marty and Clara’s relationship is tested when Clara’s family and friends disapprove of their relationship due to Marty’s age and occupation. Despite the disapproval, Marty and Clara continue to see each other
