Synopsis – What to Expect from “Marshall”
Marshall is a 2017 American biographical legal drama film directed by Reginald Hudlin. The film stars Chadwick Boseman as Thurgood Marshall, the first African-American Supreme Court Justice, and follows his early career as a lawyer for the NAACP.
The film begins in 1941, when Marshall is a young, up-and-coming attorney for the NAACP. He is sent to conservative Bridgeport, Connecticut to defend Joseph Spell, a black chauffeur accused of sexually assaulting his white employer. Despite the difficult odds, Marshall is determined to prove Spell’s innocence.
Marshall teams up with local attorney Sam Friedman to defend Spell. Marshall is a master strategist and a brilliant cross-examiner, while Friedman is a reluctant but determined ally. Together, they must battle a hostile court system and a hostile town.
Marshall and Friedman must overcome numerous obstacles, including the town’s racism and the fact that Spell has a criminal record. As the trial progresses, Marshall and Friedman uncover evidence that could exonerate Spell, but the prosecution is determined to see him convicted.
In the end, Marshall and Friedman are able to prove Spell’s innocence and he is acquitted. Marshall’s victory is a major milestone in the civil rights movement and sets the stage for his later successes.
The film ends with a montage of Marshall’s later career, including his appointment to the Supreme Court. Marshall is a powerful reminder of the importance of fighting for
