Synopsis – What to Expect from “Man’s Favorite Sport?”
Man’s Favorite Sport? is a 1964 comedy directed by Howard Hawks and starring Rock Hudson and Paula Prentiss. The story follows Roger Willoughby (Hudson), a successful sporting goods store owner who is pressured by his boss to compete in a fishing tournament. Despite his lack of experience, Roger reluctantly agrees and heads off to the tournament in Cabot Cove, Maine.
Once at the tournament, Roger is welcomed by the tournament’s organizer, Abigail Page (Prentiss), and the other competitors. He soon discovers that the tournament is not as easy as he had expected; the other competitors are all experts and the lake is full of large, powerful fish. Despite his inexperience, Roger perseveres and manages to catch some fish, but his efforts are hampered by a series of mishaps.
Meanwhile, Abigail begins to fall for Roger, but he is too focused on the tournament to notice. When the tournament is over, Roger is declared the winner and Abigail finally confesses her feelings for him. Roger is shocked, but soon realizes that he has feelings for her too. The two embrace and start a relationship, and Roger learns that fishing can also be a great way to express his love for Abigail.
The movie ends with the two of them happily fishing together, and the audience is left with a message about the importance of embracing new experiences and taking risks.
