Synopsis/Plot
Mandingo is a 1975 American drama film directed by Richard Fleischer and starring James Mason, Susan George, Perry King, and boxer Ken Norton. The film is based on the novel of the same name by Kyle Onstott. Set in the antebellum South, the film tells the story of a plantation owner’s cruel treatment of his slaves, particularly his slave-turned-fighter, Mandingo.
The film begins with the plantation owner, Warren Maxwell (Mason), and his son Hammond (King) arriving at their plantation, Falconhurst. Hammond is engaged to his cousin, Blanche (George), who is the daughter of the plantation’s overseer, Beauregard (Paul Benedict). Hammond is initially hesitant to marry Blanche, as he is attracted to his slave, Ellen (Brenda Sykes). Hammond’s father is determined to marry off his son to Blanche and arranges for Hammond and Blanche to be married.
