Synopsis – What to Expect from “Macbeth”
Macbeth is a 1948 British historical drama film directed by and starring Orson Welles. The film is based on William Shakespeare’s play of the same name and tells the story of a Scottish general, Macbeth, who is driven by ambition and a prophecy to murder his king and take the throne for himself.
The film opens with a battle scene, where Macbeth and his friend Banquo are victorious against the rebel forces of Macdonwald. After the battle, three witches prophesy that Macbeth will become king and Banquo will beget kings. Macbeth is deeply disturbed by these prophecies and sets out to make them come true.
He begins by killing King Duncan and taking the throne for himself. Banquo, who is suspicious of Macbeth’s motives, is killed by Macbeth’s henchmen. Macbeth’s wife, Lady Macbeth, is deeply disturbed by the murder and begins to unravel. Meanwhile, Macbeth is haunted by the ghost of Banquo and threatened by a group of rebels led by Macduff.
Macbeth’s paranoia and guilt increase, and he begins to fear for his life. He consults the witches again, who tell him that no man born of a woman can harm him. Macbeth is relieved by this prophecy, but Macduff is not born of a woman, as he was cut from his mother’s womb.
