Synopsis – What to Expect from “M. Butterfly”
M. Butterfly is a 1993 film directed by David Cronenberg and starring Jeremy Irons and John Lone. The film tells the story of a French diplomat, René Gallimard (Irons), who falls in love with a Chinese opera singer, Song Liling (Lone).
The story begins with Gallimard’s arrival in Beijing in the late 1960s. He is immediately captivated by the Chinese culture and its people, and especially by the beautiful opera singer Song Liling. After attending a performance of Madame Butterfly, Gallimard is entranced by Song’s performance and finds himself increasingly drawn to her.
Gallimard soon begins a passionate affair with Song, and the two become deeply in love. However, Gallimard soon discovers that Song is not who she appears to be. In fact, she is a Chinese spy, sent to seduce him and gain access to French diplomatic secrets.
Gallimard is devastated by the revelation, but is unable to break away from Song. He is torn between his love for her and his duty to his country. As their relationship progresses, Gallimard is forced to confront his own prejudices and preconceptions about East and West.
The film culminates in a dramatic courtroom scene, where Gallimard must confront the truth about Song and his own feelings for her. In the end, Gallimard is left with a difficult choice: to stay with the woman he loves, or to
