Synopsis/Plot
Luther is a 2003 biographical drama film directed by Eric Till and starring Joseph Fiennes as Martin Luther, the 16th-century German priest who sparked the Protestant Reformation. The film follows Luther’s life from his early days as a monk to his eventual excommunication from the Catholic Church and his struggle to bring reform to the Church.
The film begins with a young Luther (Joseph Fiennes) serving as a monk in the Catholic Church. He is a devoted man of faith, but he is troubled by the Church’s teachings and practices, particularly the sale of indulgences. He speaks out against the sale of indulgences, and his views are met with hostility from the Church. Luther is eventually excommunicated by the Church and is forced to flee to Wittenberg.
In Wittenberg, Luther continues to speak out against the Church and its teachings, and he begins to gain followers. He writes and publishes his Ninety-Five Theses, which become the foundation of the Protestant Reformation. Luther’s teachings and writings spread throughout Europe, and he is eventually brought to trial by the Church. Luther stands firm in his beliefs, and he is eventually allowed to return to Wittenberg.
