Synopsis – What to Expect from “Lust for Life”
Lust for Life is a 1956 biographical drama directed by Vincente Minnelli and based on the 1934 novel of the same name by Irving Stone. It follows the life of influential Dutch painter Vincent van Gogh, portrayed by Kirk Douglas.
The movie begins in the late 1880s in the Netherlands, where Vincent van Gogh is a struggling artist who is constantly rejected by the art world. He is encouraged by his brother Theo to move to Paris, where he meets fellow artists like Paul Gauguin and Emile Bernard. Despite his initial enthusiasm, Vincent soon finds himself struggling to make ends meet and is eventually forced to move to the rural village of Arles in the south of France.
In Arles, Vincent is inspired by the landscape and begins to paint prolifically. He develops a close friendship with his neighbor, the postman Joseph Roulin, and his family, who become like a surrogate family to him. He also begins a tumultuous relationship with Gauguin, which leads to a heated argument and their eventual separation.
Vincent’s mental health begins to deteriorate and he suffers from bouts of depression and anxiety. He is eventually institutionalized in an asylum in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence. Despite his illness, Vincent continues to paint and produces some of his most celebrated works during his time in the asylum.
The movie culminates with Vincent’s death in 1890. Despite his struggles, he is remembered as one
