Synopsis/Plot
Love in the Time of Cholera is a 2007 romantic drama film adaptation of the novel by Nobel Prize-winning author Gabriel García Márquez. Directed by Mike Newell, the film follows the story of Florentino Ariza (Javier Bardem) and Fermina Daza (Giovanna Mezzogiorno), two lovers whose romance is thwarted by Fermina’s father’s disapproval. Years after their separation, Florentino still carries a torch for Fermina and when her husband dies, he begins a campaign to win her heart again.
Set in Colombia in the late 19th century, the film begins with a young Florentino and Fermina falling in love, only to have their relationship ended by Fermina’s father. As the years pass, Florentino remains devoted to Fermina and continues to write her love letters, despite the fact that she is now married to another man. When her husband dies, Florentino is determined to win her heart again and embarks on a campaign to prove his love and devotion.
