Synopsis – What to Expect from “Love and Death”
Love and Death is a 1975 black comedy directed by Woody Allen. It stars Allen as Boris Grushenko, a cowardly Russian soldier in the Napoleonic Wars who is looking for a way to avoid going into battle.
The story begins with Boris and his wife Sonja (Diane Keaton) living in a small Russian village. Boris is a coward, but Sonja loves him anyway. When Napoleon’s army invades their village, Boris is called up to fight and he decides to try and desert. He is caught and sentenced to death, but Sonja manages to save him with the help of a local priest.
Boris and Sonja then set off on a series of adventures, as Boris tries to find a way to avoid going back to the war. Along the way, they meet a variety of characters, including a pair of Cossacks, a mad monk, and a mysterious figure known only as “The Stranger”.
Boris and Sonja eventually find themselves in a showdown with Napoleon’s forces. In a desperate attempt to save themselves, Boris decides to use his knowledge of philosophy to challenge the great emperor to a duel.
The film is full of comedy and satire, as Boris and Sonja’s adventures take them through a variety of different situations. In the end, Boris and Sonja manage to save their village and return home. Love and Death is a hilarious and clever film that is sure to make you laugh.
