Synopsis – What to Expect from “Love Affair”
Love Affair is a 1939 romantic drama directed by Leo McCarey and starring Irene Dunne and Charles Boyer. The story follows Michel Marnet (Boyer) and Terry McKay (Dunne) as they meet on a luxurious ocean liner and fall in love. Michel is a French painter, while Terry is an American singer.
Michel and Terry’s love affair is cut short when the ship docks in New York City and they must go their separate ways. Michel is due to marry his wealthy fiancee in Paris, while Terry is due to marry a wealthy businessman in San Francisco. Despite the separation, the two remain devoted to each other.
When Terry’s fiancee dies in a car accident, Michel and Terry decide to reunite and get married. However, their plans are complicated by the fact that Terry is pregnant with her late fiancee’s child. Michel is willing to accept the child as his own, but Terry is determined to keep the truth from him.
As the two attempt to keep their secret, they are also forced to confront the consequences of their actions. Michel’s family and friends are appalled by the news, while Terry’s fiancee’s family is determined to keep her from marrying Michel.
The film follows the two as they struggle to make their relationship work in spite of the obstacles in their way. In the end, Michel and Terry must decide if their love is strong enough to overcome the difficulties they face.
